About Us
Our mission is built on two pillars:
European engagement and democratic values
People & Planet aims to foster intercultural understanding, promote European citizenship and democratic participation.
Global partnerships and shared responsibility
People & Planet aims to advance sustainable development and build partnerships that reduce inequality and empower communities.
People & Planet is for everyone who sees the world through a global lens, acts with democratic purpose, and believes in the power of working together to make a meaningful impact.
The organisation was founded as InterStep in February 2012 by a group of Danish and international residents in Aalborg who were concerned about the weak — if not entirely absent — involvement of foreigners in local civil society.
Our Projects
What we are building together
The Women of Fisher Village
Entrepreneurship & Empowerment
“The Women of Fisher Village” is a project in partnership with SJ Vietnam, targeting 20 women living in extreme poverty along the Red River in Hanoi. Many are single caregivers for their grandchildren and face harsh living conditions with limited income opportunities. The project aims to equip them with skills, confidence, and support needed to start their own micro-businesses, ranging from creative handicrafts to locally marketable goods. At the same time, SJ Vietnam staff will receive training from People & Planet to enhance their capacity in entrepreneurship education, fostering sustainable local impact beyond the project’s duration. The initiative is financially supported by the Civil Society Fund and runs from April to October 2025.
Global Schools
Global Citizenship Education
“Global Schools is a project with Centrul de Resurse (CdR) in Moldova, built to help young Moldovans think critically about the world, take part in it, and make a difference in their own communities. It brings together teachers, peer educators, and student teachers to introduce hands-on, engaging ways of learning, all grounded in the Sustainable Development Goals. Through workshops, trainings, and a national conference, the project strengthens civic education and brings global citizenship to life, especially in rural schools. By the end of the project, more than 400 students and 25 education leaders across Moldova are expected to be involved. The project runs from February to May 2025.
Game ON
Digital Education & Gamification
“Game ON” was a 30-month project led by Fora Copenhagen, with partner organisations based in France, Croatia, Romania, and Türkiye. The project aimed to channel young people’s existing interest in video games into purposeful learning experiences. The key outcome of the project is a Toolkit featuring 20 educational activities inspired by 18 popular video games and offers practical, engaging ways to integrate gaming into learning environments. By leveraging the appeal of video games, the Toolkit empowers youth organisations and educators to innovate their programmes and connect with participants more effectively. Download the Toolkit here. The project was co-funded by the European Union under the Erasmus+ programme and was implemented from February 2022 to September 2024.
European Vagabonds
Youth Exchange & Civic Identity
“European Vagabonds” was a three-week youth exchange implemented twice, first in August 2015 and again in August 2016. Each edition brought together 25 young people from Denmark, Spain, Portugal, France, and Turkey. The aim of the project was to encourage reflection on European identity and active European citizenship and inspire greater engagement in democratic processes. To explore these themes, participants set off to encounter European identity travelling in North Jutland as “vagabonds” while completing creative tasks designed to spark dialogue and critical thinking about life as European citizens. Follow the participants’ search for European identity on the project’s Facebook page. In 2015, the project received the European Charlemagne Youth Prize at the national level.
ARTployment
Creative Employment & Arts
“Artployment” was a Capacity Building project led by CityArts (UK), with InterStep participating as a partner organisation alongside two youth organisations in Colombia and Honduras. The project addressed unemployment among young artists in Colombia and Honduras by building the capacity of partner organisations to promote entrepreneurship and help young creatives turn their artistic skills into sustainable livelihoods. InterStep led the development of a Toolkit for entrepreneurial education in an arts context and delivered training to youth workers on how to use it in their work with young artists. Download the Toolkit here.
Human Rights Start with Breakfast!
Human Rights Education
“Human Rights Start with Breakfast! Empower Youth through Human Rights Education” was a Capacity Building project in the field of youth, led by Institutul Intercultural Timișoara (Intercultural Institute of Timișoara), Romania, with InterStep participating as a partner organisation alongside stakeholders from Réunion, Italy, Peru, and Guyana. The project aimed to strengthen the capacity of civil society organisations working with young people by developing an effective, coherent, inclusive, and sustainable framework for promoting and applying human rights education. The project was implemented between 2015 and 2017.
EuroCitizenShip
European Citizenship & Democracy
“EuroCitizenShip” was a training course that brought together 16 youth leaders from Denmark, Poland, the Russian Federation, and Ukraine for a 9-day training course aimed at strengthening European citizenship both within the EU and in neighboring countries. Participants gained insights into the EU, citizenship, and identity, and were provided with specific tools to promote these concepts among young people. The project took place in Khuzhir, Russian Federation, from September 1st to September 9th, 2013.
Share2Learn
Integration & Cultural Exchange
Share2Learn connects young Danes and internationals in Aalborg through peer-led workshops and cultural exchange. Topics have ranged from human rights, meditation, and digital skills to cultural insights and job market prep. The project fosters integration and mutual learning, offering language courses and practical knowledge sharing.
European Youth Week 2013
European Citizenship & Local Democracy
The aim of this project was to promote democracy and participation among young people in Aalborg, as well as strengthening their European citizenship. The objective of this project was; (1) to raise awareness of the rights to participate in local European democracy; (2) to strengthen the dialogue between young people and politicians; and (3) to gather concrete proposals for a local youth policy which takes into consideration the ever growing group of young people with international backgrounds living in Aalborg. The project consisted of three workshops on; Youth Employment; Education and Learning; and Culture and Leisure.
Danish Weekend
Integration & Cultural Orientation
The project targeted newly arrived individuals in Aalborg and North Jutland, including job seekers, students, and au pairs, with the aim of raising awareness of Danish traditions and culture while facilitating their integration into Danish society. The project was organised as a series of weekend events, each involving 20 participants. Over these weekends, the programme covered topics such as general facts about Denmark, Danish culture and lifestyle, opportunities to involve in the local society, and practical tips for daily life. In addition to the weekend events, the project also organised one-day seminars featuring guest speakers and experts on thematic topics (e.g., “How to Find a Job in Denmark”). The project was implemented between August 2012 and May 2013 and engaged ca. 130 internationals in North Jutland.
