People & Planet is a community for everyone who cares about people and society – and the planet we share.

What happens across the EU and the wider world shapes our everyday lives in Denmark. Democracy, the climate, inequality, and human opportunities do not stop at national borders.

That is why we work to build a deeper understanding of the world we are part of – and create more opportunities to take action within it.

From knowledge to empowerment

In Denmark, we foster public education, debate, and outreach on European and international issues.

Through public debates, podcasts, workshops, and other activities, we make complex issues accessible and relevant. We do not just report on what is happening – we spark conversations and empower more people to get involved.

We believe that knowledge ignites engagement – and engagement drives action.

Local changemakers create lasting impact

Internationally, we implement projects in close partnership with grassroots civil society organizations.

We do not arrive with ready-made solutions. We contribute methodologies, knowledge, and experience that are co-developed and tailored alongside our local partners.

Through training, learning, and organizational development, we empower organizations, educators, volunteers, and youth so they can lead and sustain positive change in their own communities.

Cacao to Care

From cocoa trees to new opportunities

At the Fields of Dreams children's home in Davao, the Philippines, live 19 boys aged 8 to 17. They dream of sneakers and trips to the beach, but also of education, employment, and independent adult lives.

The children's home relies on donations of rice and second-hand clothes. But in the backyard grow more than 200 cacao trees, which could mark the beginning of a whole new story: a social enterprise providing the home with a more stable income and offering the boys an opportunity to learn about production, economics, and sales – and, over time, land their very first after-school job.

P&P helps build the foundation by ensuring the boys have genuine influence, training the staff, and rallying local support behind the vision.

Cacao to Care is about nurturing what already grows in the backyard to give the boys’ dreams for the future better ground to flourish.

Raising Rights

Children learn about their rights

Moldova is developing rapidly, yet teachers in rural villages often face limited access to modern materials and continuing education. Many were trained within an authoritarian teaching tradition and are seeking methodologies that grant children a more active role.

Together with DUI – Aalborg and local partners, People & Planet has developed participatory learning tools focused on children’s rights and democracy. Teachers and youth leaders are trained in these methods and apply them in rural schools.

Through exercises and dialogue, children learn to know their rights, speak their minds, and listen to others.

Raising Rights equips educators with innovative tools and empowers children with a stronger voice – in school and across the local community.

Empowering New Paths

New opportunities for young women in Moldova

For a young woman who has endured violence, abuse, or poverty, or who is raising a child on her own, the journey toward education and employment can be daunting. Without experience, networks, and support, even taking the first steps can feel overwhelming.

Together with a local partner, People & Planet has offered 20 women a career development program designed to help them identify their strengths, set goals, and chart a realistic path toward a fresh start in life.

Following this, the women have been paired with dedicated mentors who support each individual in turning their plans into education, employment, or other tangible opportunities.

The goal is not simply landing that first job, but building a more self-reliant working life and a safer, more secure foundation for these women and their children.

NGOasis

Civil society in Bohol takes charge

Grassroots civic engagement has not always enjoyed favorable conditions in the Philippines. Many smaller civil society organizations have deep local roots, but face barriers regarding access to training, networks, and dialogue with public authorities.

On the island of Bohol, 15 organizations are stepping up to take greater co-responsibility for their communities. They know the local needs inside out, and they are far stronger when they collaborate and speak with one united voice.

P&P has facilitated training and supported the creation of a joint platform where organizations exchange experiences, coordinate actions, and generate new ideas. The project has also strengthened their dialogue with local authorities.

NGOasis empowers local changemakers to act collectively, influence decisions, and shape their communities.

Chișinău Without Bullying

A safer school day for children in Moldova

According to UNICEF, nearly 87 percent of students in grades 6–12 in Moldova are affected by bullying – as victims, perpetrators, or bystanders. Behind this statistic are real children whose well-being and learning are suffering. No child should have to dread the school day or return home with a knot in their stomach.

Together with local partners, P&P has developed participatory methods that teach students to recognize bullying, practice empathy, and step in to help.

25 teachers and student council representatives have been trained in these methods and have facilitated workshops for more than 1,000 children.

These methodologies are now integrated into the schools' collective efforts to combat bullying. The children are not just learning about the problem – they are becoming active drivers of the solution.

Women of Fisher Village

Vulnerable women launch micro-enterprises

When harvests fail in the mountains, families journey to Hanoi hoping to earn a living. Some end up in Fisher Village, living on barges and in makeshift shacks along the Red River with nowhere else to turn. Here, many women struggle to provide for their grandchildren and make ends meet.

Together with a local partner, People & Planet has provided 19 women with training and support to build their businesses. The project began in Fisher Village and expanded to Buoc, one of the rural villages these families often originate from.

One woman sells porridge at the local market. Another dries and packages meat. In total, 11 micro-enterprises were established, all rooted in the women’s own ideas and drive.

The Women of Fisher Village is about creating sustainable livelihoods, building resilience, and fostering everyday security for families – both those who have migrated and those who stay behind.

Global Goals at Stake

Democracy and the Global Goals at stake in Georgia

In Georgia, civil society is under pressure, and the path toward the EU has stalled. This makes education on democracy both more challenging and more vital than ever.

Together with the Danish United Nations Association and SIQA, People & Planet has adapted and translated Global Goals at Stake into Georgian, training 15 educators and youth leaders in using the game.

These educators and youth leaders have since run workshops for more than 900 young people, who have used the game to explore democracy, sustainability, and international cooperation – while practicing collective decision-making.

The game remains with the educators, ensuring that conversations on democracy continue long after the project concludes.

Global Schools

Young people turning global goals into local action

Global challenges can seem a world away from daily life in a rural village school in Moldova. But democracy, inequality, and environmental sustainability are also about the very communities children live in – and their power to shape them.

Together with a local partner, People & Planet has worked with teachers, young educators, and student teachers to make the Sustainable Development Goals tangible through hands-on, participatory learning methodologies.

Through exercises, dialogue, and workshops, students are empowered to think critically, explore global interconnections, and uncover ways to make a difference themselves. The project places a special focus on rural schools and brings educators together for capacity building and a national conference.

Game ON

Computer games open new pathways to learning

Video games can sustain young people's curiosity and engagement for hours. For educators and youth organizations, the challenge is to bring that same drive to explore and learn into their activities.

In Game ON, People & Planet has, together with Fora Copenhagen and European partners, taken inspiration from the games young people already know and love.

The result is a toolkit of 20 learning activities inspired by 18 popular video games. It provides educators with concrete methods to use gaming in their teaching and engage with youth through their own interests.

Game ON is about letting the joy of gaming open doors to learning and active participation. The project is supported by the EU’s Erasmus+ program.

ARTployment

Young artists creating their own livelihoods

Artistic talent alone is not always enough to make ends meet. For young artists in Colombia and Honduras, the path from creative skills to a stable income can be challenging.

Together with the UK-based CityArts and local youth organizations, People & Planet—then InterStep—worked to empower young people with the tools to build a livelihood through their art.

We led the development of an entrepreneurship toolkit for artists and trained youth workers in utilizing these methods. This empowers local organizations to help youth turn their creative talent into sustainable businesses.

Artployment is about creating better conditions for creative ambitions—enabling more young people to make a living doing what they are passionate about.

European Vagabonds

Youth exchange and European identity

“European Vagabonds” was a three-week youth exchange implemented twice—first in August 2015 and again in August 2016. Each edition brought together 25 young people from Denmark, Spain, Portugal, France, and Turkey.

The aim of the project was to empower youth to reflect on European identity and active European citizenship, inspiring deeper engagement in democratic processes.

To explore these themes, participants traveled around North Jutland as “vagabonds,” completing creative tasks designed to foster dialogue and critical reflection on what it means to be a European citizen.

In 2015, the project was awarded the national European Charlemagne Youth Prize.

Human Rights Start with Breakfast!

Human rights education

“Human Rights Start with Breakfast! Empower Youth through Human Rights Education” was a youth capacity-building project led by the Institutul Intercultural Timișoara (Intercultural Institute of Timișoara) in Romania. People & Planet (then InterStep) participated as a partner organization alongside organizations and actors from Réunion, Italy, Peru, and Guyana.

The project’s aim was to strengthen the capacity of youth civil society organizations by developing an effective, coherent, inclusive, and sustainable framework to promote and implement human rights education.

The project was carried out during the period 2015–2017.

EuroCitizenShip

European citizenship and democracy

EuroCitizenShip was a nine-day training course for youth leaders that brought together 16 participants from Denmark, Poland, the Russian Federation, and Ukraine. The aim was to strengthen European citizenship both within the EU and its neighboring countries.

Participants gained knowledge about the EU, citizenship, and identity, and were equipped with concrete tools to work with and champion these themes among young people.

The project took place in Khuzhir, Russian Federation, from September 1 to September 9, 2013.

Share2Learn

Integration and cultural exchange

Share2Learn brought together Danish and international youth in Aalborg through participant-led workshops and cultural exchange. Topics spanned from human rights, meditation, and digital skills to cultural understanding and preparation for the Danish labor market.

Focusing on integration and mutual learning, the project offered language courses as well as opportunities to share practical knowledge and experiences.

The project was carried out during the period 2013–2015.

European Youth Week 2013

European Citizenship & Local Democracy

The aim of this project was to promote democracy and participation among young people in Aalborg, as well as strengthening their European citizenship. The objective of this project was; (1) to raise awareness of the rights to participate in local European democracy; (2) to strengthen the dialogue between young people and politicians; and (3) to gather concrete proposals for a local youth policy which takes into consideration the ever growing group of young people with international backgrounds living in Aalborg. The project consisted of three workshops on; Youth Employment; Education and Learning; and Culture and Leisure.

Danish Weekend

Newcomers finding their way into the community

Starting a new life in Denmark involves more than just learning a new language. Traditions, social norms, and everyday unwritten rules can be challenging to navigate—and finding your place in the community takes time.

Through Danish Weekend, People & Planet (then InterStep) gathered newly arrived job seekers, students, and au pairs in Aalborg and North Jutland for weekend courses with 20 participants at a time.

Here, Danish culture and everyday life were combined with practical advice and opportunities to get actively engaged locally. Themed days featuring guest speakers and experts provided valuable insights into navigating the path to employment in Denmark.

Around 130 international citizens participated. Danish Weekend was dedicated to making the new country more accessible and shortening the path into the community.
